
Stephen B. Armstrong’s scholarly writing has appeared in Film Quarterly, Film Score Monthly, Classic Images, Filmfax, Journal of Popular Culture, Journal of American Culture, Journal of the Utah Academy, Crime Time, Mystery Scene, South Atlantic Review and StoryTelling: A Critical Journal of Popular Narrative. He is the author of Pictures About Extremes: The Films of John Frankenheimer (McFarland, 2008), Andrew V. McLaglen: The Life and Hollywood Career (McFarland, 2011) and Paul Bartel: The Life and Films (McFarland, 2017). He compiled and edited John Frankenheimer: Interviews, Essays and Profiles (Scarecrow, 2013). He served as literary content editor for film director Steve Carver’s coffee table photo book, Western Portraits: Unsung Heroes & Villains of the Silver Screen (Olms, 2019). He is the ongoing general editor for Roger Corman’s New World Pictures (1970-1983): An Oral History (BearManor Media); the first two volumes of the history were published in the summer of 2020. Armstrong earned his Ph.D. in English (Creative Writing) from Florida State University in 2004. His short fiction has appeared in American Writing and Crime Time Press.
